Jacob Smith a Devon based artist began studying oil painting in his childhood. From the advent of his formal studies he had the patience for meticulous rendering and favoured subjects that emphasized his drawing ability. Since graduating from art school, Jacob has concentrated on gallery work and commissions. Smith draws inspiration from television, cartoons, news events, celebrities and religion. He uses iconic symbols and imagery from popular culture and remixes them to represent a personal ideal or cultural stance. He continuously explores these areas in his work; at times taking a dark and humorous approach, mixing religion with pornography or looking at the art world with a sometimes cynical eye. Using a traditional painting method Smith mixes styles from the old masters to Manga, creating strange juxtapositions and compositions, with interwoven layers of meaning.
